The area in front of Ben Thanh Market, a bustling shopping venue in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, will be developed with inspiration from Times Square in New York, according to the top leader of the municipal administration.

Chairman of the municipal People's Committee Phan Van Mai conveyed that message in a notice released recently regarding the operations of parks and pedestrian spaces in downtown District 1.

He said that the municipal government had authorized district authorities to launch a plan to make the best use of the space in front of Ben Thanh Market, a long-standing famous commercial and tourist venue in the city.

Specifically, Mai assigned chairman of the District 1 administration Le Duc Thanh to coordinate with relevant agencies to propose a plan to optimize the use of the area.

This space must be developed in a way similar to Times Square, a famous commercial intersection, tourist destination, and entertainment hub in New York City, he said.

Accordingly, the area in front of the market should be developed into a travel, cultural and culinary destination that introduces and promotes the city’s identity.

The municipal administration also asked district authorities to develop Ham Nghi Street and September 23 Park into areas capable of hosting economic, political, cultural, and social activities.

By April 30, 2025, all public spaces in the downtown district must be clearly identified, and relevant plans submitted to the city administration by January 15, 2025, Mai stated.

He also directed the district administration to draft regulations governing the operations of parks and pedestrian areas.

The draft regulations should include clear guidelines for organizing events at the future square in front of Ben Thanh Market, as well as at nearby parks and pedestrian areas, ensuring safety, security, order, and the prevention of traffic congestion.

The rules should outline the specific responsibilities of agencies and businesses involved in activities at public spaces, along with procedures for inspection and handling of violations.
