A coffee festival kicked off in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak’s Buon Ma Thuot City on Friday.

The Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Festival, which is in its eighth edition, features a wide range of activities including opening and closing ceremonies, a street fest, a video contest to introduce Buon Ma Thuot coffee, musical performances, a light fest, a photo exhibition, a competition for making handicrafts from coffee trees, and more.

The festival, themed 'Buon Ma Thuot - The Destination of Coffee around the World,' has 472 coffee shops that serve coffee free-of-charge to visitors.

According to Nguyen Tuan Ha, standing vice-chairman of the Dak Lak People's Committee and head of the festival’s organizing board, the Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Festival will likely be held biennially in order to brand Buon Ma Thuot coffee as well as develop Vietnamese specialty coffee.

It is intended to gradually make Buon Ma Thuot become a destination of coffee from around the world, and help raise the value of Vietnamese coffee and affirm its position in the global market.

The festival is also aimed at honoring coffee growers, processors, and traders.

In addition, the Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Festival is an opportunity for Dak Lak Province to showcase its tourism strength and potential and attract investment in the trading and processing of coffee, as well as other agricultural products in the province.

The fest takes place from March 10 to 14.
