Tourism week kicks off in northern Vietnam with huge artwork on paddy fields

A huge ‘painting’ made of rice is now on show in Ninh Binh Province, northern Vietnam as part of a festive week to celebrate local tourism.

The 2023 'Sac Vang Tam Coc - Trang An' (The Golden Color of Tam Coc - Trang An) tourism week takes place from May 27 to June 4 at tourist sites in the province.

It features a series of events, including boat tours along Ngo Dong River, tours to admire the beauty of ripen rice fields, a pedestrian street, a folk food market, traditional music performances, fairs to promote local products, folk games, and more.

A photo exhibition under the theme 'The Golden Season of Tam Coc - Trang An' will also be held during the tourism week.

One of the highlights, a huge 'painting' inspired by the famous Hang Trong folk painting titled 'Cá Chép Trông Trăng' (Carp Looks Over the Moon), is made by planting rice at different times to create different shades of color when the plants take turns to ripe.

The artwork is placed in an over-9,500-sqaure-meter field at the Tam Coc - Bich Dong tourist site, which is home to some of the most beautiful paddy fields in Vietnam.

The painting reflects local people’s wish for a peaceful and prosperous year, as well as the cooperation between the government and local residents in preserving local cultural and natural values to promote tourism.

According to Bui Van Manh, director of the Ninh Binh Department of Tourism, the province received 396,000 visitors to the tourism week in 2022, and is expected to welcome 400,000 this year.

Specifically, 85,000 visited the Tam Coc - Bich Dong tourist site during the week in 2022 and 100,000 are expected to make a trip to the site this year.
