Vietnamese authorities are taking steps to take down the South Korean TV drama ‘Little Women’ on Netflix over alleged distortions of the American war in Vietnam that violate media and cinema laws.

Le Quang Tu Do, head of the Authority of Broadcasting and Electronic Information under the Ministry of Information and Communications, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Tuesday afternoon that the agency already sent a request to Netflix Inc. on Monday regarding the removal of the 'Little Women' TV series from the streaming service.

Do claimed that the South Korean TV show was requested to be taken off the air for violating Vietnam's laws regulating media and cinema for falsifying history, downplaying revolutionary accomplishments, and insulting the Vietnamese nation. He did not elaborate further.

The alleged violations are depicted in episodes three and eight from 58:01 to 58:22 minutes and 5:41 to 7:01 minutes, respectively, when actors mention the American war in Vietnam.

Therefore, the Authority of Broadcasting and Electronic Information requested that Netflix Inc. remove this movie from its application platform in Vietnam by Wednesday.

Do elaborated that Netflix has responded to the request by stating that it is processing the take-down requirement.

He also stated that Netflix controls its movies very carefully, with only a small number of infringing films. In addition, Netflix strictly adheres to requests to remove previously infringing films.

'Little Women' is premiering on South Korea television network tVN and Netflix, depicting the lives of three poor sisters from the Oh family named In Joo, In Kyung, and In Hyung.

The plot follows their journey after In Joo's close friend dies unexpectedly and leaves her US$1,4 million in dubious funds.

As the eldest sibling, In Joo intends to use this enormous sum to take care of her two younger sisters' lives and aspirations.

However, the Oh family becomes increasingly entangled in a money-laundering, corruption, and endless manipulation conspiracy.

The three encounter a series of assassinations and suicide incidents controlled by Wonryeong Group, a secret society whose founding members are South Korean veterans in the war in Vietnam.

As the story developed, misconceptions about the war, in which South Korea participated as a U.S. military ally, became more noticeable, receiving a backlash from Vietnamese audiences.
