The Vietnamese language faculty at the Busan University of Foreign Studies is launching a writing contest about Vietnamese phở for South Korean students enrolled at the university.

The activity, which is part of the Vietnam Phở Festival 2024 set to take place in Seoul on Saturday and Sunday, is intended to promote Vietnamese culinary culture among South Korean students as well as enhance understanding and appreciation for the cultural beauty of the two countries.

According to Prof. Dr. Bae Yang Soo, dean of the Vietnamese language department at the Busan University of Foreign Studies, South Korean students studying Vietnamese at the school have written very positively about Vietnamese cuisine in general and phở in particular.

Prof. Bae hopes that the writing contest will enable Vietnamese cuisine to serve as a cultural bridge to strengthen the ties between the two nations while also promoting bilateral economic cooperation and investment between Vietnam and South Korea.

The school has promoted the contest on its campus and through various academic networks.

Besides students from the Vietnamese language department, Korean majors in Vietnamese studies and the Vietnamese language at two other universities in Busan are also joining the contest.

Students have been encouraged to attend the Vietnam Phở Festival in Seoul this weekend.

The event is expected to give students the opportunity to engage with Vietnam's unique culture and cuisine.

“The Vietnamese language department at the Busan University of Foreign Studies hopes that the event will help nurture and strengthen the relationship between Vietnam and South Korea while conveying a love for Vietnamese cuisine to international friends,” Prof. Bae said.

Tran Xuan Toan, deputy editor-in-chief of Tuoi Tre (Youth)newspaper, a representative of the organizing committee, said that choosing South Korea as a venue to introduce phở holds great significance in the context of the thriving economic, tourism, and trade relations between the two countries.

Toan said that Tuoi Tre plans to publish insightful writings from South Korean students to share their sentiments about Vietnamese phở.

“This initiative will further enhance the culinary and cultural understanding between the two countries,” he added.

The Vietnam Phở Festival 2024 is co-organized by the Embassy of Vietnam in South Korea, Tuoi Tre, and Saigontourist Group under the direction of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City.

The event is made possible through the collaboration of the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency under the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade, the Association of Vietnamese Communities in Korea, the Business Association of Vietnamese in Korea, and the Korea-Asia Economic Cooperation Association.

The festival will feature a performance stage, along with nearly 70 booths including more than 40 offering phở and other Vietnamese and Korean delicacies.

There will be spaces for cultural experiences, exhibitions, and showcases of Vietnamese cuisine and tourism.

With the slogan 'Enjoy Phở, Discover Vietnam,' the organizers aim to use the fest to promote people-to-people diplomacy, strengthen the friendship between the two nations, and highlight their culinary cultures.

They also hope to foster trade connections, leveraging the economic and tourism potential of both Vietnam and South Korea.
