A model airplane competition was organized in Hanoi last weekend on the occasion of the upcoming Reunification Day (April 30) and International Workers’ Day (May 1).

Named Funfly 2022, the contest was held by the Northern Aviation Club at Hoa Lac military airport in the capital city on Saturday morning.

The event saw the participation of model plane clubs from 11 provinces and cities across the country.

It was also part of the activities to celebrate the 47th anniversary of Reunification Day and the 136th anniversary of International Workers’ Day.

“The competition provides model airplane lovers with a playground that complies with the law and regulations of the military,” said Lieutenant Colonel Lai Hoang Vinh, an official from the Vietnamese air force.

The contest also helped discover new talents in controlling model airplanes and unmanned aerial vehicles, Vinh added.

Nguyen Bao Thap, 31, who won first prize at the competition, said he had traveled a long distance from southern Dong Nai Province to participate in the event.

Thap sent his model airplane to Hanoi on a long-haul bus trip which took about three days.

The man arrived in the capital city two days in advance to assemble the parts and check the quality of the plane.

“Steering a model plane is not too difficult, but requires basic techniques and guidance from experienced predecessors,” Thap elaborated.

Beginners can choose the electric models, which cost about VND1-2 million (US$43-87) each.

Meanwhile, Thap said he had spent more than VND190 million ($8,260) on the plane he used to compete in the contest.

Tran Hoang Hiep, 33, a member of a club in Hanoi, said he has taken part in the activity for about five years, adding that his six-year-old son is also a big fan.
