U.S. magazine Condé Nast Traveler’s travel specialists recently put together a list of 16 best island vacations in the world for 2023.
Con Dao, an island which is about 185km off the coast of Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province in southern Vietnam, made it on the list.
It is the biggest island in the namesake archipelago consisting of 16 islands.
Chosen by editor April Cole, COO of Kaanect Travel, Con Dao is featured on Condé Nast Traveler as “often overlooked as a beach destination in Vietnam.”
“And I almost don’t want to share it so it stays that way!” Cole said.
“Located off the southern coast of Vietnam, Con Dao is a smaller island with very little commercial development.
“With this, the beaches are quiet and the few resort options allow for a special retreat.”
According to Cole, the beaches are long with soft sand and are great for light water sports like SUP and kayaking but they are just a short kayak away from a beautiful reef for snorkeling.
Meanwhile, “the downtown area has a cute seaside atmosphere with little restaurants, and there are connections to history if you’re interested in exploring more.”
Cole also made sure to mention watching the turtles hatch among the best things to do while visiting the island.
“On the neighboring island, you can head over at night and stay at the ranger station where you will be informed when they spot a mother turtle laying her eggs,” she said.
“If you’re there in August, it’s likely you’ll catch this magical experience."
Another place Cole recommended readers to visit is the Con Dao Prison, which was built during the French colonial era.
One of the ways to get to Con Dao is by airplane from Ho Chi Minh City.
In fact, watching jets descending overhead while enjoying the beach at Bai Dam Trau, or Dam Trau Beach, on Con Dao is no secret to travel enthusiasts in Vietnam.
Another option is to take high-speed boats from Vung Tau, Soc Trang or Can Tho.
