A paragliding festival kicked off at Mu Cang Chai District’s Khau Pha mountain pass of the northwestern Vietnamese province of Yen Bai on Sunday, drawing the participation of 100 domestic and foreign paragliders.
The Khau Pha Paragliding Festival, themed “Flying over ripening rice fields”, is part of the activities to receive the UNESCO recognition for the art of Xoe dance of Thai ethnic minority people as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and the Muong Lo Culture - Tourism Week.

The festival is meant to promote images of Vietnam’s terraced fields and specialties of Mu Cang Chai.
It became an attractive tourism brand, helping attract more tourists to the district.

It is also the biggest annual paragliding event of Vietnam, luring thousands of people to Khau Pha mountain pass, one of the longest mountain passes in the country at more than 1,200 meters above sea level.
Every May, another paragliding festival themed “Flying over rising water on terraced paddies” is also held in Khau Pha.

As many as 100 domestic and international paragliders are expected to participate in the festival starting this month until its conclusion at the end of October.
In addition, the organizers will arrange helicopter flights for visitors to admire the beautiful terraced fields in the ripe rice season.
