Thousands flocked to the Mekong Delta province of An Giang last weekend to watch paragliding performances at a contest held for the first time in the region.
Titled 'Bay Tren Phung Hoang Son' (Flying on the Phoenix Mountains), the event, organized by the People's Committee of Tri Ton District in collaboration with the Hanoi AirSport Association, gathered 90 pilots from clubs around the country.

In the contest, the participants competed in a flight from the height of 320m on Phung Hoang Son before landing on a bull race field in Tri Ton District to find the three best players, honored for reaching the highest altitude, having the best landing, and operating the longest flight time.
The event’s organizers also held a bull race to promote the Bay Nui (Seven Mountains) bull race, a traditional cultural festival of the Khmer people in An Giang.

Tran Minh Giang, deputy chairman of Tri Ton District, said paragliding is a new sport but suitable for the district’s natural conditions and topography.
“We plan to effectively exploit the potential and advantages to diversify tourism products in accordance with local strengths and tourism demands,” Giang affirmed, adding that the locality will “step by step make tourism an important driving force of the district.”
Nguyen Huu Nam, 69, one of the oldest members of the Hanoi AirSport Association, agreed that the topography and landscape there are so attractive to paragliders.
“The terrain and landscape here will be a perfect flight point,” Nam told Tuoi Tre (Youth)newspaper.
“It would be great if we can develop paragliding combined with local tourism because this place has already been a famous destination. Paragliding will help add more tourists then."
