A national record of 100 delicious dishes made from sentinel crabs was set at an event held in Phu Quoc Island City off Kien Giang Province in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region on Wednesday afternoon.

Speaking at the event, Ho Dac Thuan, director of the Center for Culture, Sports, and Radio of Phu Quoc, lauded the island as a paradise amidst the sea blessed with natural advantages and a mild climate that attracts a large number of tourists.

Phu Quoc’s cuisine also impresses tourists with many specialties such as pepper, sim wine, which is made from the fruits of the local rose myrtle, fish sauce, herring salad, grilled jack mackerels, and sea urchins, according to Thuan.

Among that, the Ham Ninh sentinel crab, which is native to the namesake fishing village and perfect for various dishes such as crab sticky rice, sour and spicy crab soup, crab roasted with tamarind, and spicy salted crab claws, is tourists’ favorite.

Therefore, Thuan’s center organized Wednesday’s event as a way to promote the Ham Ninh sentinel crab and Phu Quoc seafood specialties at large.

Sixty chefs skillfully prepared Ham Ninh sentinel crabs and turned them into about 100 dishes such as sentinel crab in salted egg sauce, Phu Quoc-style butter sautéed sentinel crab, salted sentinel crab claws, Cham-style rice served with sentinel crab curry, and sentinel crab served with sticky rice.

“The event is expected to leave a lasting impression of the distinctive cuisine of the island on tourists,” Thuan said.

Previously, the Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam granted a collective mark to a group of Ham Ninh sentinel crab providers on February 8, 2022.
