The tourism authority of Quang Ninh Province, northern Vietnam has confirmed that there is no luxury hotel built on a limestone mountain in the province’s UNESCO-listed World Heritage Ha Long Bay and warned tourists of travel scams.

A number of groups and individuals recently posted fake photos and information of a luxury hotel named “Fantasy Ha Long Bay” on social media, saying that the hotel would nestle against a limestone mountain, a representative of the provincial Tourism Department said on Thursday.

They also claimed that guests could enjoy a panoramic view of the bay thanks to the hotel’s glass door design, along with an enormous swimming pool on the fifth floor.

They might use the fake photos, which got thousands of comments and shares, to trick tourists into booking tours, the representative added.

The provincial tourism authority advised tourists not to spread such fake news and told them to beware of travel scams.

In July last year, a fake photo of a homestay claimed to be located in a stone cave in northern Ninh Binh Province and offer its services at VND97 million (US$4,160) per night also caught public attention.
