Hau Giang Province in southern Vietnam will host a festival celebrating áo bà ba, a traditional garment of people in the southern region of the country, made out of pineapple leaf silk.
The festival, which will be the first time of its kind in the province, will be organized in Vi Thanh City, the provincial capital, from September 29 to October 1.
It will consist of a wide range of activities, including an exhibition featuring áo bà ba from the past to the present, áo bà ba performances, folk games, and events to showcase southern Vietnamese cuisine.
According to Ho Thu Anh, deputy chairman of the Hau Giang People’s Committee, the festival aims to celebrate 20 years of the establishment of the province.
“We also want to make the fest a unique feature of our province, which reminds people of an áo bà ba festival when they talk about Hau Giang,” Anh said.
“We want people to know more about Hau Giang and its people."
Anh added the festival, which is expected to take place annually, also honors the traditional cuisine of people in the Mekong Delta region, especially Hau Giang.
The fabric used for áo bà ba is made of pineapple leaf silk, which will be registered for intellectual property rights.
The special silk is made using a machine to separate fibers from pineapple leaves before they are processed and woven into fabric.
Hau Giang currently grows more than 3,100 hectares of pineapples in Vi Thanh City and Long My District.
Using pineapple leaf silk to make áo bà ba not only takes advantage of available materials but also increases the value of the local staple crop.
