The Southern Folk Cake Festival 2024 is set to take place in Can Tho City, southern Vietnam between April 17 and 21, with a three-meter-diameter banh xeo (Vietnamese sizzling crepe) being a highlight.
The organization of the 11th edition of the fest was announced at a press briefing by the municipal Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism on Tuesday morning.
As part of the festival, many chefs will collaborate to prepare a massive sizzling crepe on April 18. The event will be held at a square in Binh Thuy District.
The pancake will be sliced to serve fest-goers.
Speaking at the press briefing, artisan Hong Dung said that the giant sizzling crepe would be a southwestern-styled one.
She has taken part in several food festivals before, but the 11th southern folk cake festival will mark her first time to see the biggest banh xeo, she said.
Can Tho is considered a hub of sizzling crepes in the Mekong Delta.
Some 10 years ago, artisan Muoi Xiem, a resident of Can Tho, shot banh xeo to global fame after she joined a food competition in the United States and won an award, Dung said proudly.

The festival is aimed at calling on people to preserve the image and cultural value of the southwestern-styled banh xeo.
This year’s event will feature some 250 booths of folk cakes, food, and local specialties, along with One Commune One Product (OCOP) products.
Nearly 100 artisans will join the fest to treat visitors to 100 types of folk cakes.
Dao Thi Thanh Thuy, deputy head of the municipal department, said that this year’s fest is expected to amaze fest-goers with some new draws, including a huge sizzling crepe, an airy space, and a miniature of the 200-year-old Thuan Hung rice paper craft village in the city's Thot Not District.
