Public workers in Vietnam are given five consecutive days off for the Reunification Day (April 30) and International Workers’ Day (May 1) holiday in 2024.

As public workers are allowed to take April 29 (Monday) off and make it up on May 4, they will have five straight days off from April 27 to May 1.

The break is also expected to boost consumption, while promoting local tourism and economic growth.

Below are some getaway suggestions for the upcoming holiday, with departure from Hanoi, northern Vietnam:

Watching butterflies and fireflies in Cuc Phuong National Park

About 100km from Hanoi, Cuc Phuong National Park in Ninh Binh Province is always a favorite destination for tourists of all ages during the April and May holiday because this is the 'butterfly season' there.

At the end of the rainy season, butterflies flock around the forest, particularly when the weather is sunny following days of torrential rains.

This time of the year is also the 'firefly season' in the area.

Visitors can camp in a designated area in the park and wait to admire the stunning scenes formed by millions of fireflies at night.

In recent years, the northern city of Hai Phong has earned its name as a land of delicious foods among tourists and locals.

The renowned markets in the port city, such as Cat Bi, Luong Van Can, and Nui Deo, offer tourists ample opportunities to satisfy their culinary cravings while visiting the area.

Aside from mouth-watering delicacies such as bánh đa cua (crab noodle soup), nem cua bể (crab spring rolls), and bánh mì cay (spicy bread), beautiful beaches in Hai Phong have also drawn many tourists to the city.

With a distance of 120km, visitors can get to Hai Phong from Hanoi by motorbike, car or train.

About 300km from Hanoi, the majestic mountainous province of Ha Giang is home to towering rocky mountains and poetic ancient villages of the Mong, Dao, and Lo Lo people.

The five days of the holiday is ideal for a trip to Ha Giang, where tourists can admire breathtaking nature scenes and chill out while traveling on winding mountain passes.

Immersing oneself in local life is also an excellent method for alleviating daily stress and broadening their perspective to embrace new experiences.

Great villages to do so are Xa Phin Village in Phuong Do Commune, Lao Xa Village in Sung La Commune, Lo Lo Chai Village in Lung Cu Commune, and Thien Huong Village in Dong Van Town, to name a few.

Going to China by road

This is an affordable suggestion for those who want to go abroad during the holiday at the same cost as a domestic trip.

Through the Lao Cai border gate, which is around 300km away from Hanoi, tourists can visit Hekou County, Dali City, and Kunming City, among other places.

Through the Huu Nghi International Border Gate in Lang Son Province, which is roughly 170km from the Vietnamese capital, tourists can opt to spend their time visiting Nanning City, Libo County, Zhenyuan County, and more.

A tour of three days and two nights normally fetches around VND3.5-4.6 million (US$137-181) while a tour of four days and three nights costs VND4.7-9.5 million ($185-373).

Tourists longing for longer tours like five days and four nights would have to spend around VND10-12 million ($393-472).
